Standard Assessment Pathway For Overseas Qualified Physiotherapists - Launch a rewarding career in Australia!

For an overseas qualified physiotherapist to work in Australia, you must apply for and be registered with the Physiotherapy Board of Australia, which is a part of the AHPRA. Note that you will also need to apply for a visa issued by the Australian Department of Immigration and Border Protection (Australian Immigration Department).

What are the requirements to apply to the Physiotherapy Board of Australia?

To apply for this pathway, you need to be:

  • An overseas qualified physiotherapist (with a minimum of a diploma-level qualification);
  • Meet the qualification requirement (or already hold) registration without any restriction;
  • Be able to legally practice without restriction in your country of training.

There are no experiences or English language requirements for the Standard Assessment pathway. However, candidate should submit these evidence when it comes to applying for registration.

What are the various stages of assessment that I am required to complete?

The following diagram clearly explains the route to getting the Final Certificate for General Registration with the Physiotherapy Board of Australia (the Board), which is part of AHPRA. Registration is necessary to practice as a physio in Australia.

  • Basically, you will need to complete an Eligibility Assessment as well as a Cultural Safety Training.
  • Once you have successfully completed both of the above, you will be given an interim certificate which has a validity of 2 years and can gain a Limited Registration by lodging an applciation to AHPRA
  • After this, you have to undertake a written assessment, the results of which will be known in 6 weeks.
  • There will then be a Clinical assessment , and successful candidates will get a Final certificate and can apply for General Registration.
  • In the event that you are unsuccessful, you can avail of one more attempt. Will require to pay the fees of failed subjects
