Graduate Certificate – Gerontology
The Gerontology Certificate Program provides students with the knowledge and skills for not only understanding, but also successfully working with and on behalf of older clients. Emphasis is on services for elders using a holistic, quality-focused and inter-professional approach aimed at reaching safe and optimal level of functioning. In addition, students will be provided the skill set to become leaders as elder advocates.

A graduate of the Gerontology program at Sault College will reliably demonstrate the ability to:
- Comply with legislation and regulations governing professional practice within the Canadian health care system.
- Apply an evidence-based perspective to inform current interventions, senior care plans, programs or services.
- Consider the availability and effectiveness of community resources and referrals to plan, navigate and advocate for senior care.
- Analyze the strengths and needs of seniors independently or with an inter-professional team to plan, implement and evaluate programs.
- Assess the communicative, mental, physical, emotional and social health of older adults to promote healthy aging.
- Communicate effectively to promote person and family centered care and strengthen inter-professional collaborative practice.
- Appraise the important role of the elder advocate who works pro-actively as an individual or in inter-professional teams and the impact they have on elderly clients` healthy aging.
- Minimum Level of Education Required: 2-Year Undergraduate Diploma
- Min GPA: 50.0%
- Min IELTS overall: 6.0 (Min Reading: 5.5, Min Writing: 5.5, Min Listening: 5.5, Min Speaking: 5.5)
- Post-Secondary Diploma or Degree in a health care field
- Placement requirements: Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Search; Statement of Confidentiality Form; WHMIS Certificate; College Health Form; Immunization documentation must be submitted to the College Health Centre: 2-step Mantoux test for tuberculosis. If a 2-step was completed over a year ago; a 1 step TB test is required; Immunity against measles, mumps and rubella, tetanus/diphtheria, and chicken pox. Immunization against Hepatitis B and Influenza is strongly recommended
